The NPAYA FOUNDATION is launching a project to provide clean water for communities affected by illegal mining (Galamsey) in Ghana, starting with Akyem Abuakwa, September 2026. This initiative aims to address the water crisis in rural Ghana, where many communities lack access to safe and clean drinking water.

The objective is to provide clean water access to communities affected by illegal mining,
improve health and well-being of community members, particularly children and women,
and foster community engagement and participation in water management.

The NPAYA Foundation will collaborate with local communities, traditional leaders, and stakeholders to identify needs and priorities. At a durbar of chiefs and people of the Gyaase division in the Akyem Abuakwa State, the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, expressed deep concern over the environmental and health hazards caused by illegal mining activities. He said, “Today, some new babies are born with deformities, some without hands, eyes and all forms of deformities due to the toxic nature of the chemicals left in our waters and land.”

The NPAYA Foundation aims to build mechanized boreholes, implement effective water treatment solutions to address pollution from illegal mining activities, construct and maintain clean water facilities, including pipes, pumps, and storage tanks, providing training and capacity-building programs for community members on water management and maintenance.

The FOUNDATION’s clean water project will have a significant impact on the lives of communities affected by illegal mining in Akyem Abuakwa. Providing clean water shall go a long way to reduce cases of waterborne diseases, fewer sick days, and lower medical expenses, children can focus on their education, and girls can attend school without worrying about menstrual hygiene, women can invest their time in education, business, and family care, leading to economic empowerment. The project requires budget and funding to cover the costs of water source development, infrastructure construction, water treatment solutions, community training, and monitoring and evaluation. We estimate a budget of $200,000 to $ 500,000 to support the project’s implementation.

By supporting the NPAYA FOUNDATION’s clean water project, we can make a significant difference in the lives of communities affected by illegal mining in Akyem Abuakwa. Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to clean, safe, and sustainable water.

Thank you for your support!

I had the opportunity to witness and support the recent Clean Water Project campaign, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the impact it’s making. Access to clean, safe drinking water is something many of us take for granted but for so many communities, it’s still a daily struggle.
This campaign is not only raising awareness but also taking real, actionable steps to bring sustainable water solutions to those in need. From building wells and water filtration systems to educating local families about sanitation and hygiene, the work being done is both compassionate and life-changing. Clean water is a basic human right, and this campaign is helping bring that right to life for so many. I’m proud to support it — and I encourage others to do the same
